Reading Time: < 1 minute

To attract bluebirds to your yard, use their favorite foods. And that depends on the season, habitat, activity level, and food availability.

Bluebirds are insectivorous, meaning they eat insects primarily throughout the spring, summer, and early fall.

Their diets include:

-Snails, grubs, caterpillars, and other mollusks and insect larvae

-Grasshoppers, crickets, beetles, ants, spiders, and other insects

-Flying insects such as moths, termites, and mosquitoes

-Berries such as sumac, holly, dogwood, pokeweed, and hackberries

-Small tree and vine fruits, including grapes and cherries

Foods to Attract Bluebirds

If you don’t have any insects handy (and who does), there are a variety of foods you can add to your bird feeders to tempt these blue beauties to visit.

 Consider offering:

-Mealworms

-Small chunks of fruit like apples or pears. We put organic fruits like strawberries, cherries, and raspberries in our feeders, and the bluebirds love them.

 -Peanut suet

 -Sunflower chips

Bluebirds won’t eat sunflower seeds, millet, whole peanuts (this makes the Blue Jays happy), or hummingbird nectar.

Beyond offering food to attract bluebirds, the best way to keep your bluebirds around your backyard is by providing safe nesting cavities for them – birdhouses and nest boxes.

If you feed them and build it, they will come.
