Birding Adventures Worth Reading About

Thing I Love This Week and Can’t Live Without: The Delightful Horror of Family Birding: Sharing Nature with the Next Generation

Reading Time: 2 minutes

One of the first questions you encounter when you tell people you’re into birds is, “Are you one of those crazy people who drive hours in hopes of seeing a bird?”

Yes, I am.

It’s no crazier than buying a lottery ticket in hopes of winning the Powerball.

Only chances are greater I’ll see the bird than win the lottery.

The Delightful Horror of Family Birding

So when I saw a book with the title, The Delightful Horror of Family Birding, I had to read it.

It’s hard enough chasing birds with a few other crazy fellow bird enthusiasts.

But chasing birds with a family. I really had to read this book.

And I was not disappointed.

The Delightful Horror of Family Birding is a delightful collection of essays about birding adventures.

Exploring Life’s Deepest Questions While Birding

What I loved about this gem from author Eli Knapp is that it tells stories about meeting new people, introducing young people to nature, and learning about our fascinating world.

Knapp, a professor of intercultural studies and biology at Houghton College, and a regular contributor to Birdwatcher’s Digest, New York State Conservationist, and other publications, explores life’s deepest questions on his journeys.

But he intentionally distances himself from the flock to revel in the insights he gleans from birds, his students, and the amazement his children experience.

One of the most rewarding aspects of being into birds is meeting people and listening to their stories.

Everyone has a story to share, and certain ones leave an imprint on our lives.

This book is a beautiful compilation of astute observation and experiences.

Many essays are funny. Others are quite poignant.

Keeping Our Eyes Open

And the best thing is that you don’t have to be a crazy birder to enjoy this entertaining book.

Knapp says “Life is at its richest when we go outdoors together and keep our eyes open.”
