We’re deep into spring migration, and all the talk is about how to attract orioles to backyards on their way to their summer destinations for peak nesting season.
To keep these songbirds around longer, provide them what they love to eat.
Baltimore Orioles eat beetles, grasshoppers, spiders, and fruit, like mulberries and wild black cherries.
If you don’t have insect farms at your disposal, and your fruit and berry trees have months yet to bloom, you’re in luck as there are other options.
If you want to attract orioles to your backyard, cut an orange 🍊in half and place it where they can peck at the juice and pulp.
Then, your orioles will love you and keep visiting your yard.
Other Ways to Attract Orioles
Oranges go a long way to attract orioles to visit your yard, but here are other enticing foods they enjoy:
-Grape jelly
-Nectar (in the same 4 to 1 ratio of water and sugar used to attract hummingbirds).
-Berries in your garden from native trees and shrubs convince orioles to stay around all summer.
Provide an abundance of insects, including mealworms, the orioles’ preferred food when feeding their nestlings.
If you provide it, they will come. Or at least stick around a little longer so you can enjoy seeing these fabulous birds up close and listening to their beautiful songs.
