My partner and I live next to a small patch of marsh grass in okomos mi. Every night and morning we have the treat of watching the birds take flight or return to the roost.
I have a new found respect for these birds. I come from Connecticut. We were taught that they were a nuisance and not a very interesting species.
In the last 20 or so years I have come to find that it’s just not true.
I’ve been feeding now on a yearly basis for many years.
Always looked forward to their return to my feeders as it was a sign of spring.
Here in Michigan it’s a different story.
Our first full winter reveals they over winter here.
Fascinated by them as it is quite amazing to watch and hear the roost twice a day.
We have hundreds here.
What I cant understand is how the roost is set up.
No trees just marsh grass. In my research on how a common Grakle nests I find only single pairs of them in trees.
How is it that there are no pictures of a large colony of nesting Grackles?
My brother in law and his partner Katie have introduced us to birding.
While I’m not sure we will take it to their level ( traveling to watch migration) I’m Fascinated by the species.
