Birders are often regarded as being a bit too serious, but that’s all about to change in Aaron Reynolds’ new book Effin’ Birds: A Field Guide to Identification.
Reynolds joins the ranks of Sibley, Kaufman, and Peterson writing a compact, comprehensive, and silly field guide featuring more than 200 of the rudest birds on earth.
This is not your grandparent’s field guide, and unlike the Sibley Guide, Effin’ Birds Field Guide is laugh out loud funny.
Birds and Outlandish Comments
Effin’ Birds is an interesting concept that grew from a Twitter account with 169K followers.
Creating birds that offer snarky outlandish comments.
It pairs classic, monochrome bird illustrations, many from the great John James Audubon, with sayings relying heavily on F-bombs and other curse words.
Here are a few of our favorite PG-rated Effin’ Birds.
It’s the juxtaposition of these vintage bird images next to modern vulgarities that raise eyebrows.
And cause you to spit your coffee across the kitchen table.
Effin’ Birds: A Field Guide to Identification
We quickly became fans.
When we heard Reynolds had a bird field guide in development through crowdsourced book publisher Unbound, we made our pledge and waited in anticipation for the guide to be published.
It took over a year, and finally, our copy arrived mid-September, along with a snazzy pin badge.
After opening the first page, the laughs keep coming.
The book is crammed with classic bird illustrations, replete with delightful, but naughty aphorisms.
It’s a field guide as basic as it gets divided into 2 parts: Land Birds, and Water Birds.
Reynolds provides whimsical detail about each bird species, its habitat, and identifying characteristics.
It’s a great read, and perfect for when you need a moment of levity in your life.
Put down your Sibley Guide and grab a copy of Effin’ Birds: A Field Guide to Identification on Amazon ($12.50/$9.99).
You’ll never look at birds the same way again.
