As we approach the 2024 election, the importance of voting and the responsibility it brings to each of us cannot be overstated. In a time when political discussions often seem divisive, we can turn to nature for inspiration and a reminder of how to coexist peacefully—just like the birds we love to watch.
Birdwatching: An Escape from the Political Noise
The political landscape has been overwhelming in recent years, and many of us seek solace in the great outdoors. Birdwatching offers a beautiful escape from the chaos, allowing us to immerse ourselves in the beauty of nature. Armed with my camera, binoculars, and a notebook, I step outside, leaving behind the noise of news cycles and political debates. Instead, I find myself captivated by the stories unfolding in nature.
Carly Simon puts it best, “The sound of birds stops the noise in my mind.”
There’s something refreshing about focusing on the simple joys of nature, where red birds and blue birds coexist without any political baggage.
The Beauty of Diversity in Nature
Take, for example, the Northern Cardinal, a vibrant red bird that graces many backyards. I’ve affectionately named my male cardinal “Big Red.” His name isn’t a political statement; it simply reflects his stunning color. Similarly, my favorite blue-feathered friend, the Blue Jay, “Big Blue,” brings joy without political implications.
Birds are not defined by their colors or names; they’re simply beautiful creatures that bring joy to our lives. When we watch them, we can appreciate the diversity of nature and understand that each bird, regardless of its hue, plays a vital role in the ecosystem.
The Majestic Bald Eagle: A Symbol of Unity
The Bald Eagle, America’s national emblem, is significant to many, especially Native Americans.
Native Americans consider the Bald Eagle and the Golden Eagle to be sacred. Francis Mitchell, a Navajo medicine man, says eagles appear in many tribes’ creation stories, and they are revered because of their strength, boldness, and courage to withstand any obstacles.
The Bald Eagle’s strength and independence symbolize freedom and resilience. But it’s essential to remember that this majestic bird also represents the spirit of unity and collaboration. Just as eagles soar high, we can rise above our differences and work together toward common goals.
Migratory Birds: A Testament to Coexistence
One of the joys of birdwatching is witnessing the arrival of migratory birds. These tiny travelers, like the Ruby-throated Hummingbird and the Scarlet Tanager, remind us that the world is filled with diverse species, each with unique strengths. They coexist harmoniously with resident birds, sharing resources and spaces without conflict.
Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are the smallest migratory birds, but they are pretty fierce and won’t stand for being bullied by bees or other high-flying backyard birds.
It is exciting to watch them navigate through the backyard, perching on the tiniest branch sprig because Hummingbirds can’t walk or hop. Watching them use their little legs to move sideways while they perch is fascinating; if you get close enough, you can feel the breeze when they fly by.
Scarlet Tanagers are another one of my favorite migratory birds. But please don’t punch my ticket to a MAGA rally yet. Red is just a color, and the Scarlet Tanager wears it incredibly brilliantly.
Birds Foster Spirit of Inclusivity
My usual visitors in my backyard—Downy Woodpeckers, Black-capped Chickadees, and American Goldfinches—welcome migratory birds like Indigo Buntings and Baltimore Orioles. No walls separate them; instead, they share resources and look out for one another.
Watching these migratory birds join my backyard residents reminds me of the importance of welcoming others into our communities. Just as birds do not judge one another based on size or color, we, too, can learn to embrace our differences and foster a spirit of inclusivity.
Humanity can learn from this spirit of coexistence. As we face challenges, let’s remember the importance of empathy and collaboration. We can build a brighter future by respecting each other’s views and choices.
Lessons from the Birds
As we gear up for the 2024 election, let’s embrace the lessons our feathered friends teach us about coexistence, unity, and the joy of diversity. Voting is our opportunity to voice our opinions and make choices that impact our communities. Like birds working together to survive and thrive, we must come together and advocate for the issues that matter most to us.
Let’s celebrate our right to vote and recognize that, while we may have different views, we can coexist peacefully and respect one another’s choices. As birds flock together for mutual protection, we can unite to create a society that values cooperation and understanding. Let’s make our voices heard and celebrate the beauty of democracy together!
