Video: Mourning Doves are True Love Birds

Doves are Inspiration for the Term Lovey-Dovey

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Mourning Doves are the symbol of peace but also the inspiration for the term lovey-dovey.

During the Middle Ages, people believed all birds chose their mates on Valentine’s Day. Yes, some birds mate mid-February, but mating season occurs during spring and summer for most birds.

The dove symbolizes romance because Greek mythology associated the small, white bird with Aphrodite, the goddess of love. In Roman mythology, it’s Venus.

Doves represent monogamy and loyalty in relationships because they mate for life.

Our beautiful Mourning Doves, a favorite of Cooper’s Hawks, tend to live shorter lives in our backyard. That’s why we cherish seeing these love birds cuddling on branches and giving their mate rapid light pecks around the neck and head while slightly shaking their wings.

Watching how attentive they are to each other, preening each other’s feathers, enjoying little birds chats together, and keeping a watchful eye over each other is a pleasure.

Mourning Doves are true love birds.
